Sunscreen: Prevent from sun exposure or Cause skin cancer?

Hawaii, as the first US state, passes the bill banning certain sunscreens that contain oxybenzone and octinoxate. These two chemicals, oxybenzone and octinoxate, are found to cause significant harmful impacts on Hawaii’s environment and residing marine organisms. Because of the ingredient formula created with two chemicals, the new law could prohibit more than 3,500 of the world’s most popular sunscreen products, such as Coppertone, Hawaiian Tropic, and Banana Boat, from selling and distributing on the islands.

Although octinoxate has excellent UV protection feature, it is shown to cause biochemical or cellular level changes and endocrine disruption. While hormonal disturbance effects were found in experimented animals, octinoxate is also detected in human’s urine, blood, and mother’s milk. This means that we have already been exposed to this harmful chemical. Similarly, oxybenzone also poses a hazard to human health. It is an allergen and a hormone disruptor that soaks through the skin.

You should carefully check the ingredients of sunscreen before using. Harmful ingredients may come with different names. For example, most Korean cosmetics use ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate and octyl methoxycinnamate, which are similar chemicals to octinoxate.
